Scotland: Child protection measure deferred

1 min read
Voluntary organisations in Scotland have won their fight to delay the introduction of a new child protection law.

The Scottish Executive has agreed to defer until April a measure in the Protection of Children (Scotland) Act 2003 that makes it a criminal offence for organisations to fail to check new members of staff against a list of people disqualified from working with children.

The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations argued there was a lack of guidance on how the Act would work, particularly in relation to the types of jobs to be checked against the list. Full guidance was only issued on 17 December.

The Act will still come into force on 10 January. After then it will be a criminal offence for anybody on the list of disqualified workers to continue to work with children.
