Child protection surge in Scotland

Social Care
More and more children in Scotland are being referred to social services, government figures reveal.

Scottish Government statistics show a 67 per cent rise in child protection referrals between 2002 and 2007. The number of children put on the child protection list also rose steeply up by 29 per cent in the same period.

Anne Houston, chief executive of child protection charity Children 1st, said: "The rise in the figures could suggest that we are getting better at recognising the emotional and physical needs of children."

According to the data, girls were consistently more at risk than boys and physical neglect was by far the most likely cause for concern.
