EDUCATION NEWS: Scotland - Male role needed in the classroom

More male teachers are needed in Scotland's schools to combat a rise in misbehaviour and violence, says a teaching union.

The Educational Institute for Scotland (EIS) said boys, particularly in primary schools, needed positive male role models if they were to change behaviour.

The latest school exclusion figures from the Scottish Executive show that exclusions for physical abuse of school staff almost doubled in the past five years, to 1,506 in 2002/03.

However, the total number of exclusions fell by three per cent to 36,500, and more than 99 per cent of them were temporary. Male pupils accounted for more than four-fifths of exclusions.

The EIS said smaller class sizes and recruiting more teachers would make it less likely for some pupils to be excluded.
