Education News: Scotland - Exclusions soar after targets removal

1 min read
The number of pupils permanently excluded from Scottish schools increased by a massive 54 per cent in the last year, according to figures published last week by the Scottish Executive. At the same time, the number of temporary exclusions rose by eight per cent.

The increase has led to concern that schools and local authorities inScotland are not signed up to the wider children's agenda.

Stephen Mason, president elect of the National Association of SocialWorkers in Education, said: "The one thing that Every Child Matters doesis challenge us all not to see these as isolated problems. It isregrettable if the only solution that can be found is a permanentexclusion, which is not a solution but only one stage of identifying ayoung person's need. I would like to see more inclusive and more plannedintervention, not a removal of the problem for it to be addressed later, which is what permanent exclusion does."
