A study published by the Department for Children, Schools and Familieslast week found male teachers can treat boys more harshly, while femaleteachers treated boys and girls more equally.
Earlier this year the continuing decline in the proportion of maleteachers prompted the then education secretary Alan Johnson to call formore men to work as primary teachers.
But Gender and Education: The Evidence on Pupils in England said it is"simplistic" to assume having more male teachers could help boys'attainment.
