Education News: Learning mentors - Evaluation shows significantimpact

The introduction of learning mentors to help pupils who struggle at school has been a widespread success, according to a Government-commissioned report.

An evaluation of the 386m Excellence in Cities scheme said: "Thelearning mentor strand was one of the most effective elements of theprogramme."

Learning mentors are salaried staff who provide a bridge across academicand pastoral support roles. Mentors are one of the three main strands ofthe Excellence in Cities scheme, which aims to raise achievement inurban schools.

Yet despite the success of learning mentors, the report said the schemehad little impact on GCSE grades. The Department for Education andSkills insisted this was no longer the case. "If you look at recentrises in GCSE results it's indisputable that the Excellence in Citiesprogramme is working," said a spokeswoman.
