Education News: Extended Schools - Fears over lack of clear accountability

The extended schools agenda will not work unless there are clear lines of accountability, warn school governors.

Last week, the National Association of School Governors met with schools minister Jacqui Smith to raise a number of concerns. It is calling on the Government to make it clear who will have ultimate responsibility for running the new schools.

Professor John Adams, the association's chair, told Children Now he met with the schools minister last week to go through the issues and got a positive response. He said: "I alerted her to a number of our concerns. She listened and agreed and a dialogue continues. People in the department do have their minds focused on these issues but they are very difficult, very problematic."
