Education News: Exclusions - Parents groups join to fight Bill clause

1 min read
The Government is facing fresh opposition to its plans for dealing with excluded pupils.

Two parents charities have joined forces to claim that a centralproposal in the Education and Inspections Bill is unworkable.

Parentline Plus and The Advisory Centre for Education have expressedconcern about clause 90 of the Bill. The clause creates a new offence bystipulating that where a child has been excluded from school for up tofive days, parents will commit an offence if their child is seen in apublic place during school hours.

In a joint statement the charities said: "Exclusions of up to five dayscannot be challenged by parents nor will governors review the exclusion.Yet, unless the parent ensures that the child remains indoors duringschool hours for the whole period they are liable for a heavy fine evenwhere it is the school's relationship with their child which is toblame."
