Education News: Every child matters - Schools told to play fullpart in reforms

Schools have been told driving up standards should not prevent them from playing a full part in the Every Child Matters reforms.

Anne Jackson, a senior official at the Department for Education andSkills, said: "We firmly believe that standards and wellbeing areinextricably linked."

Speaking at the Local Government Chronicle's Achieving Every ChildMatters in Schools conference, she said that schools should be "anactive voice in shaping local services, engaging with their localchildren's trust arrangement".

They should work with trusts "on an ongoing basis" to find places forhard-to-place children, promote the educational achievement of childrenin care and develop childcare and other extended services. Jackson alsocalled on schools to work closely with local authorities and otherpartners to develop local children and young people's plans.
