Education News: Every child matters - Councils advised to supportcitizenship

Local authorities should provide more support for schools' citizenship education programmes to help meet the Every Child Matters objectives, say MPs.

The Education and Skills Select Committee's report Citizenship Educationdescribes councils' current support for the subject as "patchy" eventhough it could help achieve the Every Child Matters outcomes.

Liberal Democrat education spokesman and committee member StephenWilliams said: "A good citizenship programme gives children theopportunity to discuss topical, and even controversial, issues that willprepare them for full and active participation in life afterschool."
