Education News: Education Bill - Sector fails to make hoped-forchanges

1 min read
The children's sector has failed in its quest to persuade the Government to make a series of changes to the Education Bill.

A number of amendments fell by the wayside last week as the Billcompleted its final reading by MPs. It will now pass to the House ofLords where campaigners will make a last-ditch effort to force throughchange.

The Government resisted one change stating that head teachers shouldmake a staff member responsible for identifying young carers, assessingtheir educational needs and promoting their wellbeing (Children Now,24-30 May). Danni Manzi, development officer at The Princess Royal Trustfor Carers, said: "We're disappointed but we will continue to push for adesignated professional in schools to support young carers."

Ministers rejected another change that aimed to ensure all teachers candemonstrate an understanding of special educational needs and disabilitylegislation. The amendment was supported by Labour MP GordonMarsden.
