One hundred and forty-five groups of training organisations, schools and colleges were given the green light last week to offer the three-level diplomas from next year. A further 197 groups have been given conditional approval to deliver the new courses from the following September, when a further five diploma subjects will be introduced.
Each consortium will receive 30,000 for each type of diploma it offers. The Government intends the full range of 14 diploma subjects to be available to 14- to 19-year-olds by 2013, in time for an introduction of compulsory learning to the age of 18.
Graham Lane, chair of the Engineering Diploma Development Partnership's steering group, said: "Collaboration between consortia and employer engagement are the two big things we're looking for."
