Speech scheme given go-ahead

Early Years Education Health
The government's new communications champion has helped devise a programme to improve speech and language skills among school-aged children.

Jean Gross was given the task of spearheading the government's Better Communication Action Plan last week, and will begin work next January. She is currently director of charity Every Child a Chance Trust, which has formed a consortium with communication charities.

The consortium is planning to run the A Chance to Talk pilot scheme in primary schools across three councils. The initiative aims to improve awareness of communication needs and offer more targeted support.

"We need to be gathering good evidence on bringing together the needs of children with difficulties while creating a communication-friendly classroom," Gross told CYP Now.
