Speech and language services face 'bleak' future

Children with speech, language and communication needs are facing an increasingly "bleak" outlook, the government's former communication tsar has warned.

Writing in a comment piece for CYP Now, Jean Gross argued that support for children with speech, language and communication needs has become harder to access over the past year.

She argued that the government's special educational needs (SEN) reforms risk creating a “cliff edge effect” for children with less complex needs who may miss out on services, because new education, health and care plans will “focus commissioners on high-end needs”.

“This is already beginning to happen, with some speech and language therapy services reporting that they are only able to work with children with SEN statements, and that the time children wait for help is lengthening,” said Gross.
