Education: Bill amendment forgets youth work

1 min read

Clause 6 of the bill put a duty on authorities to provide activities for 13- to 19-year-olds. At the bill's second reading in the House of Lords education minister Lord Adonis said he would table an amendment to include youth work (YPN, 28 June-3 July, p3).

The amendment published last week does not contain the phrase "youth work"; it says activities must include "personal and social development".

Tom Wylie, chief executive of The National Youth Agency, said the changes are useful but would have been better if it had used the actual term "youth work".

The amendment is likely to be discussed in the House of Lords today (12 July), but will not be voted on until all other amendments have been discussed.
