Early years: Sure Start to run 5,000 local events

Events ranging from World Cup-themed football matches to an odd sock competition will mark National Sure Start Month.

More than 5,000 local events are to take place throughout June to drawattention to Sure Start and the services it offers families inEngland.

In the East Midlands, services are to hold a World Cup-themed Dribblersand Kickers football event for children of all ages.

The Ladybird NHS Nursery in Southend Hospital is getting three- to14-year-olds to transform old socks into colourful puppets for acompetition.

Lisa Green, childcare business manager at the nursery, said: "Instead ofthe usual colouring competition that we've done in the past, we'dthought we'd do something a bit different."

A giant hand painting, said to be the largest in the world, was unveiledat the month's official launch at Tate Modern on 6 June. Children fromearly years services across England made the 400 square metre picture.
