The Buildings in Sure Start Local Programmes study is part of thenational evaluation of Sure Start and was carried out by researchersfrom the Institute for the Study of Children, Families and Social Issuesat Birkbeck College, University of London.
It looks at how buildings and refurbishments have been planned, designedand built and is based on a survey of 60 programme managers, sitevisits, and interviews with Sure Start staff, users andpractitioners.
Authors Mog Ball and Lisa Niven found that being consulted about thedesign and the appearance of buildings boosted a sense of communityownership but people felt alienated if their views were ignored.
