Sure Start: Research highlights significant impact on schemes' local areas

Sure Start has helped lift children out of poverty, says a report published last week.

There has been a significant reduction in the number of under foursliving in "workless households" that are totally reliant on benefits inSure Start areas, says the study.

And there has been a decrease in the number of children aged up to 17 inlow income families receiving income support. The figures for 260 SureStart programmes buck national trends in England.

The findings come from the latest report from the National Evaluation ofSure Start. They will be a morale boost for Sure Start workers who havedefended the 3bn scheme against claims it has "failed" (ChildrenNow, 4-10 January). It came under fire after previous evaluation resultsshowed Sure Start may not help the most vulnerable families.
