Early years: Scottish review aims for higher qualifications thanEngland's

A review of the early years workforce in Scotland is likely to propose higher minimum levels of qualifications than in England, Children Now has learned.

The review looks set to recommend that all senior managers should have adegree, all practitioners should have Level 4 qualifications and allsupport workers Level 3 qualifications.

It is also expected to propose the creation of a 10-year strategy todevelop the childcare profession.

The Scottish Executive set up the review in June 2004 to look at how toimprove the childcare workforce. The conclusions of the review'ssteering group are now being considered by ministers.

A final version is expected to be out for consultation early next year.Children Now has been told the review will suggest the roles of earlyyears professionals should evolve in line with more integrated working.It also backs a single qualifications framework with a common core ofskills.
