While pre-school teachers in the UK are qualified to degree level, only"a quarter or less" of residential and childcare workers and educationassistants have qualifications at levels four and five, according toresearch by Children in Scotland for Children in Europe magazine. Incontrast, half of early years staff in Sweden have a degree.
The research concludes that British early years workers need to becomebetter qualified if they are to deliver a more flexible curriculum.
Peter Moss, editor of Children in Europe, said: "In the UK we need toconsider where we want to be in 10 years, with an ever more detailedcurriculum applied by technicians or with a broad framework curriculum."
