Early years qualifications review launched

2 mins read Early Years
An independent review of early years qualifications has been launched to examine how existing standards and career progression can be strengthened in the sector.

Professor Cathy Nutbrown, professor of education at the University of Sheffield and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Early Childhood Research, has been asked by government to lead the review.

It will run alongside a review of the standards for awarding the Early Years Professional Status currently being conducted by the Children’s Workforce Development Council.

Announcing the publication of the policy paper Supporting Families in the Foundation Years, children’s minister Sarah Teather said the review will consider how to ensure that new entry qualifications are of a high standard and meet the needs of employers.

She said: "Alongside parents, well-qualified and motivated professionals working in the early years can make a real difference to children’s early development. I am today announcing a review of early years qualifications to make sure the people working with our youngest children have the skills they need.
