The Scottish Government launched a consultation on 9 September, aimed primarily at education authorities. It includes information about biometric technology and how it can be implemented successfully. The government is inviting comment before education authorities elect to put a biometric system in place.
The publication draws on guidance published by the British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (Becta) last year, explaining the legal implications of using biometric technology and the protection of privacy afforded to pupils by the Data Protection Act 1998.
The guidance also asks education authorities to consider whether the school warrants such levels of security, the adequacy of current systems and possible alternatives.
