Mental wellbeing of children in primary education: consultation on the draft guidance.

Education Health
The Department of Health asked the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) to produce public health guidance on promoting the mental wellbeing of children in primary schools.

The guidance is for teachers, school governors and professionals with public health as part of their remit who are working in education, local authorities, the NHS and the wider public, voluntary and community sectors.

This guidance should be considered within the context of a range of services that promote the mental wellbeing of children in primary education. These range from school-based, universal approaches promoting social and emotional wellbeing to the referral and treatment of children with a mental illness. The guidance includes support for children with special needs.

The guidance considers that focusing on prevention could avoid inappropriate referrals to clinical services, as well as early identification of children at risk of having learning disrupted by social and emotional difficulties.
