Why is the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice) issuing guidance on wellbeing in schools? Despite its obvious interest in ensuring clinical excellence is observed in the NHS, Nice has a wider brief that encompasses health promotion as well as the prevention and treatment of ill health. Its public health guidance is available to anyone with a direct or indirect role in public health: social workers, teachers, sports staff, youth workers - even members of the general public, who can use a quick reference guide rather than the full guidance if they prefer. A considerable proportion of the guidance published so far looks at issues that have an impact on children and young people.
