Disability: Sure Starts' role needs definition

Clear guidance about the role of Sure Start centres in rea-ching out to disabled children and their families is needed, says a study commissioned by the Department for Education and Skills.

All Sure Start centres should employ, or share, a staff member withexpertise in special needs and disabilities, the A Better Start reporturges.

The report was conducted by the National Evaluation of Sure Start to seehow Sure Start meets the requirements of children and families withspecial needs and disabilities.

The evaluation also concluded that centres need to carry out home visitsto reach the most isolated families, and that Sure Starts indisadvantaged communities should offer speech and language therapy andmental health services.
