Disability equipment: Parents urged to take legal action

Families of severely disabled children are being advised to take legal action against health authorities and councils who refuse to pay for equipment.

The charity BDF Newlife advised parents to take legal action after asurvey of British statutory organisations revealed refusals werewidespread.

Clare Griffiths, campaign manager at BDF Newlife, said lawyers hadconfirmed organisations who forced children to wait excessively fortreatment or had blanket ban policies - such as refusing to buy poweredwheelchairs for under-fives - had grounds to sue.

The survey found the primary care trust that spends the most onequipment is Southampton, at 441,820 a year, compared to Harlow,which spends just 504.
