Criminal records checks: Transport service defends policy

A company providing driving services for disabled children has hit back at claims it was prepared to allow an employee without a Criminal Records Bureau check to transport young children (Children Now, 25 April-1 May).

Trade union GMB claimed one of its stewards posed as an applicant for adriving position with contractor Impact, which provides services for theLondon Borough of Ealing, and was told he could "start tomorrow" despitenot having undergone a criminal record check.

A spokesman for Impact said: "There would always be a period ofinduction, training and accompanied driving under the supervision ofCriminal Records Bureau-checked staff."

A spokeswoman for Ealing council added all Impact staff working withchildren had been checked and were always accompanied by checkedpassenger assistants from the council.
