Bristol City Council wants checks to be carried out on all of the city's 2,210 governors in a bid to protect children from potential paedophiles.
But the DfES said the proposals were "not very sensible". "A lot of governors don't have any contact with children at all, and purely go into schools to attend meetings," said a spokeswoman. "If Bristol did this and others followed suit that would create problems for the bureau." Bristol City Council refuted the comments, saying it expected all school governors to "take an active part in school life, not simply attend meetings".
In a forthcoming report the council is also set to call for similar checks for all councillors.
