Health News: Criminal Checks - Vetting of GPs set to start next year

General practitioners will have to undergo checks carried out by the Criminal Records Bureau from next February.

All Primary Care Trusts in England will have to have GPs on their lists checked, with the exercise starting from 1 November 2004 and completed by 3 February 2005, the Department of Health has announced.

Dr Andrew Dearden of the General Practitioners Committee warned that PCTs would need to start undertaking the 35,000 checks promptly if they were to meet the deadline.

He said: "If PCTs wait until the last minute we will end up with a situation like the teachers, some of whom couldn't teach because the checks hadn't been done."

Plans to check GPs were stalled in 2002 when the Criminal Records Bureau was overwhelmed by the level of demand for checks.
