Criminal checks: Home Office review prompts fears of price rise

After evidence from a meeting of the House of Commons Committee of Public Accounts on 15 March was published last week, a spokesman for the Home Office said: "We are looking at the whole issue of funding for voluntary checks and the volume that we are processing for free."

The committee examined the work of the Criminal Records Bureau, taking evidence from the body itself, the Home Office and Capita, which holds the contract to deliver criminal checks.

It established that the Home Office had underestimated the cost of the Capita contract by 150m over 10 years. This has led to speculation that the price of checks could rise again and free checks for volunteers might even be scrapped.
