CRIME PREVENTION: Oldham hosts police youth justice project

1 min read

Following the Oldham riots in 2001, the police consulted young people, mainly young Asian men aged 15 to 17. They found that the police were perceived to be treating young Asian people unfairly.

From this, the police authority organised an initiative that 60 young people will experience over two weekends to "help break the myths of prison".

Maxine Moar, youth consultation worker at Greater Manchester Police, said: "The young men are being arrested, put in cells, sent to court and will work with youth offending teams." They will be placed in young offenders' institutions via Group 4 security vans. They will also do probation training, accredited through Connexions with an Assessment and Qualifications Alliance certificate.
