Consultation on Statistics that Measure the Progress of Children from Disadvantaged Backgrounds to Higher Education

1 min read Education

What's it all about? The government releases annual statistics that show the educational achievement of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. This data can then be used to help narrow the gap in achievement between disadvantaged young people and their peers.

What are the main points? The government would like to drop one of the measurements that is currently used to show the progress of children. The FYPSEC (full-time young participation by socio-economic class) indicator measures the gap in access to higher education between 18- to 20-year-olds in the top three and bottom four social classes. The consultation is seeking views on replacing it with the free school meals measure, which shows the proportion of young people aged 15 in maintained schools by free school meal status who progress to higher education by the age of 19.
