Consultation of the Week: Planning for schools development

1 min read Education
What is it all about? Run by the Department for Communities and Local Government, this consultation follows the coalition government's plans to allow parents, community groups, teachers and charities to set up free schools. It will look at proposed changes to the Town and Country Planning Order 1995 to allow more planning freedom.

What are the main points? Changes to the planning system were initially outlined in the Conservative Party's green paper Open Source Planning, and will only apply to plans to convert existing buildings into schools. Planning permission is currently required to change the use of non-school buildings. Regulations for current schools requiring building works or for the creation of new school buildings will remain the same.

Who can have their say? Local planning authorities, community representatives and school promoters are encouraged to respond and are being asked to set out any unintended consequences of allowing buildings such as shops and houses to be converted without planning permission.
