Consultation of the week: Administration of additional paternityleave and pay

This Department of Trade and Industry consultation proposes allowing employed fathers to take up to 26 weeks of additional paternity leave, some of which can be paid if the mother has returned to work. It would be available during the second six months of the child's life.

The Government wants to equalise paid leave for both fathers andmothers. This will mean the total time parents can take paid leave willrise from 39 to 52 weeks. The changes will also apply to statutoryadoption pay.

The Department of Trade and Industry wants to find out how it canadminister the proposals and minimise the burden on businesses whileproviding more choice for parents and giving fathers a greateropportunity to be involved in raising a child.
