The union said its solicitors were deciding on the most appropriate action to prevent the 54 redundancies, the likely result of the organisation's transfer to five local authorities (YPN, 2-8 August, p4). It has also called on youth minister Beverley Hughes to intervene.
John McDade, Unison regional officer, said that Connexions staff should be transferred to the new employers under the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) regulations, which protect employees when organisations are taken over by another employer.
He added: "The board of Connexions says it has legal advice that Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) regulations do not apply. But we've got legal opinion to say that's not the case. We will be challenging the board on that. We believe it may have breached consultation procedures as well."
