Connexions: Tyne and Wear considers future

1 min read
Connexions Tyne and Wear is considering whether to follow neighbouring Connexions Tees Valley in dissolving the organisation, sparking fears about the possible further loss of head office expertise in the North East.

Consultants are examining a set of options for Connexions Tyne and Wear, which include disbanding the organisation and distributing frontline services between five local authorities in a similar move to Connexions Tees Valley (YPN, 30 August-5 September 2006, p6).

Consultants are expected to make a proposal for the future of Connexions Tyne and Wear next month and a decision is expected at the beginning of May.

Karen Loughlin, Unison regional officer, said: "Staff are concerned about the future."

Connexions Tees Valley will cease to function at the end of this week. From 1 April, a team within Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council will provide data on young people to all five councils.
