Concerns over play evaluation

Campaigners fighting the impending closure of London's oldest adventure playground have questioned council attempts to evaluate play provision in the area.

Lambeth Council plans to close the 52-year-old Triangle Adventure Playground in November next year as it extends the neighbouring Archbishop Tenison's School.

After community members voiced anger over the plans, the council agreed to conduct an independent assessment of play provision in the area.

But in a letter to the council, Triangle's chair James Clancey wrote: "The assessor's expertise lies entirely in the field of sport provision with an emphasis on the delivery of the school sport curriculum."

But a spokeswoman denied the assessor lacked the relevant skills. "The assessor's team contains a play adviser with more than 25 years' experience," she said.
