Children's Services: Joint area reviews will help services

Responses to an Ofsted-led consultation on the Framework for Inspection of Children's Services show a cautious welcome for the planned joint area reviews, which will involve teams from a range of inspectorates assessing all services in local authority areas from September.

But the responses showed concern that the rigour of inspections could be compromised under the new system. Concern was also expressed about the use of self-assessment.

The involvement of young people in the inspection process received strong support, although some professionals were worried about how representative the sample of young people would be.

Respondents said that the proposals would also need to focus on young people who may commit crime, the role of parents and carers, and the contribution of voluntary services.
