Briefing: Crib Sheet - Joint inspection framework

2 mins read
The Government has launched a consultation on changes to the way that services for children and young people are inspected.

Are there really 10 inspectorates? Count 'em: social care, health, prisons, police, courts, education, adult learning, money, probation, and the Crown Prosecution Service. Ofsted is the lead inspectorate.

So this is about education? No, this is something else. This measure is about local authorities and other children's services. Those 10 agencies are responsible for taking forward the new arrangements for the inspection, assessment and review of services for children and young people - aka joint area reviews - which will replace the current inspections of council education and children's social services, Connexions, 14 to 19 training, and children's fund programmes. Every three years, a children's services authority area will have a multi-agency team of inspectors parachuting in to conduct a review of children's services across the board, and evaluating the way in which those services work together to improve the five outcomes for children and young people.
