Children's fund: Sports project in Kent to close after failing to secure funding

The Try Sports project has received 70,000 a year for two years from the Children's Fund to encourage 10- to 13-year-olds in Cheriton, Folkestone, Romney Marsh and Hythe to participate in sport.

The Children's Fund informed project officers that the scheme's application for funding had been unsuccessful shortly after Christmas. The project office will close on 31 March with the loss of seven jobs and 10 Millennium Volunteers.

Linda Sell, project manager at Try Sports, said: "The Children's Fund said we should have got funding from other sources, but our work also covers statutory services and most funders won't support that kind of work".
