CHILDREN'S DIRECTORS: Retirement rush as council chiefs baulk at green paper proposals

Heads of local authority social services and education departments are clamouring to retire early in response to the government's green paper, says a senior local government figure.

David Clark, director general of the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives, warned that many councils would find it difficult to recruit a director of children's services because existing directors were wary of the onerous responsibilities they would have to shoulder.

The green paper Every Child Matters contains proposals to create a director with overall responsibility for children's services, ranking above the chiefs of education and social services.

Clark told Children Now that potential children's directors were concerned that the job was merely about having someone in the frame should something go wrong. Chief executives had told him privately that very few were interested in the new role - although none were prepared to make their concerns public.
