Children's centres: Kent parents back community model

A children's centre in Kent has begun operating as a social enterprise to ensure local parents have a say in how it's run.

Millmead Children's Centre is one of the first to begin trading as acommunity mutual enterprise after adopting a new governance structurelast month. More than 140 parents have already signed up as members. They will have the chance to vote five community representatives ontothe centre's management board.

The centre is based on a Sure Start local programme led by Kent CountyCouncil's social services. The council recently confirmed it wouldsupport the venture.

The board will include representatives from centre staff, the countycouncil and other state and voluntary agencies the centre workswith.

Manager Frances Rehal said the centre was in the process of establishing"trading wings". Its out-of-school club will be one and its day nurserywill be another. The children's centre itself will operate as anothertrading wing.
