Sure Start model benefits teens

1 min read Early Years
A children's centre in Kent has embarked on a project that applies its experience of Sure Start to services for teenagers.

Millmead Children's Centre in Margate has developed a programme for teenagers aged 11 to 16, which runs from 5.30pm to 7.30pm every Tuesday.

The programme offers a range of activities including cooking, art and crafts. The scheme, which includes visits from a nurse specialising in sexual health, also gives young people the opportunity to discuss issues affecting them at home or in school, as well as their GCSE options. In addition, there is a session on smoking cessation.

The scheme is funded by Kent County Council, which has agreed to contribute £5,000 per year for the first three years of the project. The young people also secured an additional £6,500 in funding from Kent Youth Service, which was used to purchase equipment for the centre, including a pool table and a video game console.
