Sure Start: Community police key to fall in crime

An innovative partnership that allows community police officers to work from Sure Start Millmead children's centre in Kent has been identified as a key factor behind a drop in crime in the area.

Managers say the initiative has helped to develop links with the community and has led to an increase in the number of incidents of domestic violence being reported.

PC Adam Hinton, jointly based at the centre and Margate police station, said: "The partnership has supported the building of trust between myself and people on the estate."

Since it was launched nine months ago, there has been a 9.1 per cent reduction in crime in the Millmead area, bucking trends in the district.
