Childminders: Review finds that Scots are happy with standards

1 min read
The first ever analysis of the quality of childminding in Scotland says most childminders are doing a good job.

The review, by the Care Commission, found that more than 97 per cent ofparents said they were happy or very happy with their childminder.

"This shows what we already know - that childminders provide a qualityservice and should have confidence in and be proud of what they do. It'sbeen a bit of a Cinderella service in the past," said Maggie Simpson, director of development for the Scottish Childminding Association.

But there is room for improvement. Of childminders inspected last year, just over 20 per cent were pulled up for not meeting one or moreregulations. The review said they must have robust complaintsprocedures, should communicate with parents more effectively, anddevelop their skills through training. Only a quarter havequalifications, although many more have undertaken training, saidSimpson.
