ENGLAND
Childminders are allowed to look after up to six children under the age of eight, of whom no more than three should be under the age of five - including no more than one under the age of one.
Childminders are registered by Ofsted, which ensures they are suitable to care for children and that the home is safe.
Childminder start-up grants are managed by the local authority. The grant can cover toys and equipment, adaptations to minor premises, insurance and registration fees.
Under the Sure Start initiative, local authorities are responsible for building links between children's centres and childminders. SCOTLAND
