Social Care News: Scotland - Childminder buddy scheme planned

The Scottish Childminding Association (SCA) is to start recruiting experienced childminders to "buddy" others in a pilot scheme running in three areas of central Scotland.

The scheme, which has been influenced by the success of the National Childminding Association's Support Childminder mentoring project, will run in Stirling, Falkirk and Clackmannanshire.

New childminders will be teamed up with experienced childminders in a bid to boost the number of people staying on in the profession.

"During that first year people are particularly vulnerable and so it is useful for them to have someone they can bounce ideas off," said Maggie Simpson, SCA's national development officer.

The 18-month pilot, which is funded by the Scottish Executive, is an example of projects aimed at tackling a shortage of childminders in Scotland.

Simpson said this was a result of increased demand for childcare, which had not been met by an equivalent rise in recruitment.
