Childcare: Agency hits out at Assembly criticism

The London Development Agency has hit back at a critical report by the London Assembly on its childcare programme.

The assembly's Economic Development, Culture, Sport and TourismCommittee looked at how the London Development Agency was implementingthe mayor's childcare strategy. It said the agency had not done enoughto address the needs of children with disabilities and that the agencyshould support individual childminders.

But Denise Burke, senior childcare manager for the London DevelopmentAgency, said there were errors in the report. She said the ChildcareAffordability Programme was now looking at childcare for children withdisabilities.

She also pointed out that the agency did support individual childminderswho were part of a childminding network. "The scrutiny was undertakenlast July so this report is a year old," she added.
