Childcare: Councils miss out on affordability cash

Seven London councils have missed out on the first round of subsidies to improve flexibility and reduce the cost of childcare in the capital.

The first subsidies from the Childcare Affordability Programme wereannounced today (Wednesday, 9 November), with childcare providers from26 local authority areas gaining funding.

More than 3,200 childcare places will be created in this first trancheof the 33m programme, which is led by the London DevelopmentAgency.

But seven un-named councils did not have applications ready in time.Denise Burke, senior childcare manager at the agency, said there wereseveral reasons why they had not produced successful bids.
