The London Development Agency (LDA)-run pilot, which subisidises childcare places, ends in March 2009. But despite a promise of government funding to continue the work, no further details have been revealed.
Kate Green, former vice-chair of the commission, said it is vital a decision was made imminently. "People are anxious," she said. "It might look like there's plenty of time but, for the providers and parents using the service, time for planning the scale of provision is running out."
Denise Burke, head of childcare at the LDA, said it was understandable people were nervous: "The fact is this has been successful and has helped so many parents, so it would affect many lives if it came to an end."
